The Vietnam War

On the other side was United States fighting a proxy war with the aid of the South Vietnamese attempting to prevent the spread of communism during the Cold War era. The war ended with the US withdrawal in 1973, and unification of Vietnam under communist regime 2 years later with more than 3 million people, including 58,000 Americans killed during the armed struggle.
