Japanese Woodblock Prints Collection Volume 2 of 2

About the collection:

Japanese Woodblock Prints art form grew alongside with the rapid economic and prosperity growth during the Japanese Edo period (17th century). With the increased economic development, arts and entertainment industry such as kabuki, courtesans, geisha, and pleasure districts were flourishing. This had in turn fueled a voracious demand for woodblock prints as a form of advertising, promotional, and also as a decoration. Utagawa Hiroshige (1797 – 1858) and Katsushika Hokusai (1760 – 1849) were some of the most notable woodblock art print artists that emerge during this period.

Japanese Woodblock as an art genre and printmaking technique was a great influence to the Europe artists during the 1870s. It was studied in great detail by many early-impressionist and post-impressionist artists such as Degas, Manet, Monet, Van Gogh, and Toulouse-Lautrec.
