About the collection:

Rudolph Ackermann (1764 – 1834) was an Anglo German bookseller, inventor, lithographer, publisher and a businessman. During his career, he founded a print and picture emporium that opened in 1796 in Strand, London. His unique shop sold prints, books, paintings, arts and craft supplies. It was a fashionable hang out place for upper class Londoners during the time. His shop was a popular spot until it was closed in 1856.

Perhaps, he was best known as the publisher of “The Repository of Arts, Literature, Commerce, Manufactures, Fashion, and Politics“. First published in 1809, the monthly magazine had forty volumes until 1828. It featured articles and illustrations on fashion, social and literary news. Beautiful lithographic color plates were included in every issue and on occasion it also included patterns and fabric samples. The magazine quickly become a huge fashion influence and eagerly anticipated by society women in London. It was the best visual source and fashion reference that money can buy during the time.

By the end of the 40th volume, the magazine have published 1,500 hand colored plates.
