Coles Phillips Great American Art Deco Artist
Clarence Coles Phillips (Oct 1880 – June, 1927) was a prominent American artist and illustrator. Most popularly known for his creative depiction and elegant yet sexy styles of women and unique use of negative space in the paintings. Phillips’ use of negative space (think photography film negatives) draw viewers’ to attention to look harder, setting off imaginations to mental fill-in the image on magazine covers. Phillips was able to establish himself as a staple artist in the advertising scene, which created many other advertising images and posters. Fun fact, Cole Phillip’s master pieces are painted with live models in watercolor format, as the artist do not like to work with photographs.
Coles Phillips unique talent saw him producing many cover arts for popular magazines such as “Good Housekeeping” and “Life” magazine, which for two years starting in July 1912 made him their sole cover artist. Other magazine cover arts produced were for “The Saturday Evening Post”, “Liberty”, and “Woman’s Home Companion”. His artworks are also featured in many popular advertising of the time such as “Holeproof Hosiery”, “Luxite Hosiery”, “Scranton”, “Community Silver”, and “Sheaffer’s Pencil” just to name a few. One of Cole’s notable sexy women pin-up style artworks for “holeproof Hoseiry” was considered bold and acclaimed in the field of advertising artworks during the time.
