Gustave Dore (1832 – 1883)
An engraver, draftsman, illustrator, watercolor artist, painter and sculptor, Gustave Dore illustrations gifted us amazing imaginations through his artistic works that even today continued to define the collective vision of some of the most important story telling books ever produced. Gustave Dore illustrations often has an epic sense of imagination and dramatic driving force, which were able to capture literary scenes with the unexpectedly original phantasmagoria. Dore innovated the genre of storytelling through the images he produced. The way we would imagine the classics today such as Don Quixote, Lucifer, or even the Bible stories were large part due to Gustave Dore’s Illustrations.
Identified as a child prodigy with great talent in arts, he began by drawing cartoons for the French press Le Journal pour rire at the tender age of just 15. Born in Strasbourg, France, Dore was never married throughout his life. For his contribution in arts, the government of France made him a Chevalier de la Légion d’honneur in 1861. He passed away in Paris in 1883.
