Women Pin Up Artist Enoch Bolles
Enoch Bolles (1883 – 1976) was an American painter, and women pin up artist. A National Academy of Design graduate, Bolles spent an estimated 30 active years drawing and painting as an artist, from 1914 to 1943, until a long term illness stopped him.
A master in Art Deco, Women Pin Up oil painting, Bolles worked exclusively as cover artist creating hundreds and hundreds of women pin up arts for various publications. He was most well known for illustrating front covers for Film Fun magazines. Consequently, he produced over 200 covers for “Film Fun” magazine alone, and hundreds more for other periodicals, pulps, glamour, and humor men’s magazines during the time. Besides pin up work, Bolles was also a versatile illustrator who created advertising for Sun-Maid Raisins, Vicks VapoRub, and Zippo lighters.
Bolles’ pin-up girls were always sexy and fun-loving. Provocative in their poses but also occasionally caught in embarrassed or slightly self-conscious moods. Cheerful and adventurous, the girls are often full of energy and glowing in pink of health. The models often have cute child-like faces which contrasted to their sensual bodies often dressed in wet bathing suits, and flimsy negligees. Completing the elements of his cover art, Bolles often incorporated into his works, naughty catchy taglines, high contrast Art Deco patterns, and decorated with Hollywood movie props.
Enoch Bolles’s work was undeniably the gold standard during the era, sitting amongst the greatest pin up artists of the period such as Gil Elvgren, George Petty, Alberto Vargas, Art Frahm, Zoe Mozert, and many others.
