W Heath Robinson
W Heath Robinson (1872 – 1944) (“W” for William) was an English cartoonist and book illustrator that is best remembered for drawings of elaborate and complex machinations that is meant to achieve very simple tasks or results. So famous for his elaborate machinery that there was a code breaking machine that the British used during World War II that was named after him! Heath Robinson came from a family of artists, as his father Thomas Robinson (1838–1902) and brothers Thomas Heath Robinson (1869–1954) and Charles Robinson (1870–1937) all worked as illustrators.
With an ambition to be a landscape painter, W Heath Robinson attended art school at Islington School of Arts, and later at Royal Academy Schools. However graduated to become a cartoonist and book illustrator following the footsteps of his family. Got his start in his career illustrating books that are very collectible and phenomenal today such as Hans Christian Andersen’s Danish Fairy Tales and Legends (1897), A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1914), Tales from Shakespeare (1902), The Arabian Nights (1899), among many others.
He passed away in 1944 and the Heath Robinson Museum that was opened in 2016 near to where he lived with thousands of his artworks to commemorate his life’s achievement.
