Edmund Dulac
Born in Toulouse, France and artistically gifted since young, Edmund Dulac (1882 – 1953) was one of the more notable storybook artists from the Art Nouveau era of The Golden Age of Illustrations. Original vintage story books with Edmund Dulac prints are rare and highly sought after today.
Originally studied law, but later found his true love in illustrative arts, dropped out of law school and pursued arts under scholarship in Académie Julian, Paris. Dulac’s favorite medium of expression was with water colors. He left for London in 1904 to began an illustrative career as magazine illustrator, and book illustrator. Innovations in color printing technology soon fueled his meteoric rise as an accomplished illustrator during the time. The Golden Age of Illustration spanned over four decades from the 1880s into the 1920s, and saw breathtaking artistic works in books and magazines from the likes of Dulac, Arthur Rackham, Charles and Heath Robinson to name a few.
Dulac’s most famous works of art include beautiful illustrations for books like the Stories from Hans Christian Andersen, Arabian Nights, Sleeping Beauty, and the Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám. He died in 1953 of a heart attack while illustrating John Milton’s Comus. He was 70 years old.
