Warwick Goble Illustrations

Warwick Goble (1863 – 1943) was a British, born in Dalton, North London. Warwick Goble Illustrations and paintings are famous in the vintage children books genre. Goble’s specialization was in water color paintings and have strong preference towards Indian and Japanese themes in his illustrations. Other notable book illustrators during his time (Victorian Period) were Edmund Dulac, and Arthur Rackham.

Goble got his start as a lithographic artist for printer/publisher in illustrating for magazines such as “The Pall Mall Gazette” and “The Westminster Gazette” primarily in black and white. However, rather than black and whites, his strength and love was in water color paintings. By 1905s, with advancements in printing technology, color plate books were surging in popularity and quickly becoming standard, especially in fantasy and fairy tales genre. By 1909 onward, Warwick Goble has become the resident book illustrator for Macmillan, Chatto and Black, by whom he served for the next thirty years.

His strength in painting in watercolor medium were a perfect fit for the job and went on to support and produce many now famous illustrated books such as “H. G. Wells’s The War of the Worlds“, “The Water Babies“, “Green Willow“, and many more (listed below). He gradually retired in the late 1930s. Warwick Goble did not marry nor had any children, he led a fairly comfortable middle class life and lived to his ripe old age of 80. He died in his Surrey home in 1943.
